‘Waste to Art’ Beach Clean-up Marks World Environment Day in Gan

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment, in partnership with Parley Maldives, organised a beach cleaning programme titled ‘Waste to Art’ in Gan, Laamu Atoll, yesterday to mark World Environment Day.

According to the Environment Ministry, more than 200 metres of beach on the island were cleaned as part of the event, which was attended by 220 volunteers. Participants included representatives from the Ministry, the Laamu Atoll Council, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Gan Council, and members of various other organisations.

The clean-up was carried out between 6:30 am and 9:00 am. The Ministry reported that a total of 987.2 kilograms of plastic and other waste were collected during the activity. The collected waste was subsequently recycled, and artworks were created from it, with winners selected from among the participants.

Director General of the Ministry of Environment Mohamed Zahir stated that the primary aim of the campaign was to raise awareness among children and the wider public about the harmful impacts of waste dumping.
