Practical work has commenced on the construction of an ice plant in Meemu Veyvah as part of efforts to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and support local fishermen.
The project is being implemented by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) under an initiative of the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources to improve access to ice for fishing communities.
The project agreement was signed on 27 September last year and the facility is scheduled to be completed within 240 days. Equipment required for the project has already been delivered to the site, while foundation work for the building is currently underway.
Once completed, the plant will have the capacity to produce 60 tonnes of flake ice per day and will include a storage facility capable of holding 100 tonnes of ice.
The facility is expected to improve the availability of ice for fishermen in the area and support fishing operations by providing easier and more reliable access to ice.
