Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has opted not to participate in discussions with Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed concerning a potential alteration in the governance system.
The Democrats, who garnered the third-largest share of votes in the initial round of the presidential election conducted on September 9, have put forth a proposal to both the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
This proposal entails conducting a referendum aimed at amending the government system before September 25.
Nasheed, addressing supporters of The Democrats, revealed that the party had proposed a confidential vote on the governance system, scheduled to take place before September 25.
He emphasised the importance of seeking former President Yameen’s guidance when contemplating such a substantial change. Consequently, he has formally requested the relevant authorities to facilitate a meeting with President Yameen.
The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has indicated that conducting a referendum would necessitate a minimum of 30 days and approximately USD3 million in funding.
