Muizzu stated that the charges brought against Yameen were political charges.

The interview marked his first engagement with an international news agency since his election, offering a glimpse into his administration’s priorities.

During the interview, Muizzu also stated his intention to combat corruption within his government. He also responded to questions about his statement regarding the potential release of former President Yameen, who had been convicted of bribery.

When asked about the decision to transfer Yameen to house arrest rather than pursuing a legal process for release, Muizzu clarified that the law permits the government and the President to make such a transfer for individuals serving prison sentences.

He shared his views concerning the judiciary, stating that he believed that the judiciary is not working independently. He further indicated his intention to begin efforts to free the judiciary from political influence.
