Former President Abdullah Yameen, currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for charges relating to bribery and money laundering, has been granted additional leniency following his shift to house arrest.

This was prompted by health concerns surrounding Yameen’s well-being, leading to a further relaxation of his sentence terms.

Contrary to some initial reports suggesting Yameen’s transfer to house arrest, a media official from the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) informed a local media that Yameen has been granted permissions to leave his home for medical treatment after notifying the MCS.

Yameen’s transfer to his residence took place on the 1st of this month, following the presidential election in September. According to statements from correctional authorities, this decision was primarily based on health-related considerations.

The status of Yameen’s appeal against the jail sentence remains pending in the High Court. Yameen’s legal representatives have expressed apprehension over the prolonged duration of the case and have accused the prosecution of deliberate delays.
