Former Maldivian President Abdullah Yameen, currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for money laundering and bribery, has joined the People’s National Front (PNF), defying restrictions on his political involvement.

Yameen formalised his affiliation with the PNF during a ceremony held at the party office last night. The event saw the submission of Yameen’s membership form by former Communications Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, although Yameen refrained from making any public statements.
During his imprisonment, Yameen had been temporarily transferred to his residence following a change in government. Subsequently, he conducted political rallies, a move that contravened the Prisons and Parole Act. Authorities warned of revoking concessions if the violation persisted, prompting Yameen to cease political activities. Since then, his involvement in politics has been minimal.
Last month, the Maldives Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) granted approval for the establishment of the PNF, a party initiated by Yameen following his departure from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC). The party has nominated Yameen’s son, Zain Abdullah Yameen, as its founder.
Despite being incarcerated, Yameen is legally barred from forming a political party. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has designated him as its president, but his departure from the party due to convictions for money laundering and bribery has left him without legal standing.
