Former President Abdullah Yameen seeks assurance from President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, stressing two pivotal objectives: the recovery of lost Maldivian waters and the withdrawal of Indian troops from the country.
Expressing these concerns during his first public address since being placed under island arrest, Yameen conveyed his sentiments at a rally held at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) headquarters. He underscored the significance of ensuring the acquisition of Maldives’ territory and the reclamation of full sovereignty and independence from external influences.
Yameen emphasised that regular updates and schedules on the progress regarding these critical matters would be imperative. He cautioned that a failure to address these issues might provoke sentiments akin to the past rallying of “India out,” urging the removal of Indian troops.
Yameen highlighted the importance of policies announced by Muizzu’s government while expressing a keen interest in the withdrawal of foreign troops, particularly Indian forces, and the reclamation of areas in Maldives waters allegedly abandoned under the current administration’s governance.
Reiterating his stance on foreign military presence, Yameen firmly conveyed that foreign soldiers, notably Indian troops, should not have a presence in Maldives and should vacate the region.
The two principal issues highlighted by Yameen mirror the priorities articulated by Muizzu. Throughout the presidential campaign and post-election period, Muizzu consistently pledged to withdraw foreign troops and endeavour to reclaim areas of Maldives’ waters allegedly released to external entities.
