The Zakat Fund has provided financial assistance to cover down payments for social housing units allocated by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) for the first time.
The initiative was announced in October, when Zakat House stated that it would pay the down payments for 14 individuals listed in the national register of poor and needy, with the estimated cost at USD 340,000.
Figures released yesterday showed that MVR 91,000 has been spent so far on down payments for the housing units. A media officer from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs confirmed that this marked the first instance of the Zakat Fund supporting housing-related payments.
Alongside housing assistance, Zakat House allocated MVR 1.48 million in December for medical support. However, the total expenditure on treatment reached MVR 2.13 million, as assistance was also provided to individuals who had received support before December.
The largest portion of medical aid was directed towards cancer treatment, amounting to MVR 301,075.50. Additional allocations included MVR 114,810 for mental illness, MVR 68,967 for heart disease, MVR 67,676 for lung disease, MVR 36,083.50 for kidney disease, and MVR 25,443 for organ transplants. A further MVR 865,310.85 was spent on treatment for other illnesses.
Zakat House also reported expenditures across education and religious services, including MVR 521,733.43 for Qur’an memorisation and education, MVR 420,698.09 for religious programmes, MVR 305,655 for higher education support, and MVR 16,443 for training courses. An additional MVR 401,950 was spent on book translation.
The Zakat Fund stated that it continues to expand its assistance across housing, healthcare, education, and religious services to support vulnerable communities.
