The Maldives Zakat House has announced that it will begin accepting Zakat al-Fitr in the form of food grains starting this Saturday, with collection in the Malé area to be held at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE).

According to the Zakat House, the collection of grains in Malé will take place on 14 and 15 March from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. On 16 and 18 March, Zakat will be accepted during two sessions: from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Zakat al-Fitr must be paid at a rate of 2.4 kilograms of food grain per person, based on the type of staple grain commonly consumed in daily meals.

The Zakat House stated that several types of grains will be accepted for the payment, including regular rice, Thailand rice, basmati rice, red rice, wheat flour and atta flour.

Officials said the initiative allows individuals to fulfill the Zakat al-Fitr obligation by donating staple food items, which will later be distributed to those in need ahead of Eid.

Zakat al-Fitr is a mandatory charitable contribution required of Muslims before the Eid al-Fitr prayers, intended to support vulnerable members of the community.
