Independent presidential candidate Hassan Zameel has laid out plans to reduce the country’s debt within two and a half years, should he be elected as the nation’s leader.
Zameel, whose campaign is primarily conducted through social media channels, has made a firm commitment to rein in government spending and ensure that the national debt remains at a sustainable level over the specified time frame.
He stressed that achieving this objective hinges on garnering public support, with one aspect of his strategy involving reducing government expenditures in areas with populations fewer than 1,000 residents.
In addition to his fiscal promises, Zameel has reaffirmed his pledge to raise the minimum wage to USD1,300. His comprehensive manifesto encompasses a range of policies aimed at addressing pressing issues in the country, such as improving working conditions for those in hazardous environments.
In his manifesto statement, Zameel explained that his decision to run in the 2023 presidential election stems from his belief that a coalition of political parties cannot adequately serve the nation’s best interests.
He has vowed to prioritise justice for individuals who have gone missing or fallen victim to violence, along with efforts to recover embezzled state funds.
