Zameel Vows to Abolish Income Tax and Introduce Wealth Tax

Independent candidate for the presidential election, Hassan Zameel, has pledged the elimination of income tax and to implement a wealth tax, as revealed in his manifesto.

The core feature of Zameel’s plan is the introduction of a wealth tax system, coupled with mandatory property zakat contributions. This move aims to redistribute wealth within the society, reflecting a departure from the current income tax structure.

Zameel’s policy framework extends beyond taxation. His agenda includes a

review and potential reform of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and import duties. 

Additionally, the manifesto also includes charging a toll on the bridge or bridges in the Male’ area, reviving craftsmanship and finding ways to provide products to tourists and export markets. 

Within the realm of economic development, Zameel’s manifesto places emphasis on the enhancement of the fisheries and agricultural sectors in the Maldives. Part of this plan involves the establishment of dedicated processing facilities, intended to transform raw materials into goods suitable for long-term storage and eventual exportation.

Furthermore, Zameel commits to improvements in public transportation, both by road and sea. 

Zameel’s manifesto also pledges to elevate the quality and affordability of communication services, aiming to provide accessible connectivity for the populace.
