Zimna, the General Secretary of Maldives Health Professionals Union (MHPU) and Maldives Trade Union Congress (MTUC), effectively represented the interests of Maldivian workers during the recent UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2023).

The event, which took place from 10th to 19th July, saw the participation of numerous stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

Together with a delegation from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Zimna and her colleagues, including Jordi Musoni (Deputy Secretary General of CESTRAR Rwanda), Olivier Ouedraogo (Secretary General of CSB Burkina Faso), Paola Simonetti, and Diego López, played a vital role in raising the voices of workers at the forum.

Throughout the intensive two-week gathering, the delegates focused on advocating for the fulfillment of workers’ demands related to five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) scheduled for review this year.

Zimna addressed the Maldivian government after its Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and denounced the persistent limitations to workers’ fundamental rights, such as the right to collective bargaining and to freedom of association in the Maldives.

“Despite the fact that right to collective bargaining and to freedom of association are a pre-requisite to achieve the SDGs and social justice, the limitations to these rights persist in the Maldives,” said Zimna in her address.

By actively engaging with representatives from various sectors and providing valuable insights, Zimna and the ITUC delegation contributed to ensuring that workers’ perspectives were taken into account during the discussions on sustainable development. Their commitment to bringing forward workers’ concerns has strengthened the global effort towards achieving the outlined SDGs.
