5 Food Trends You’re Going to See Everywhere in 2021
Somehow we are at the end of 2020 already. This year felt like a 100 years and also three days in all in one. We're more than ready to say goodbye and to most of the food trends that reigned this year. That being said, let's take a look at the 7 food trends that you're bound to see everywhere in 2021.
1. Charcuterie boards branch out
Cured meats, cheeses and finger foods are no longer the stars of the charcuterie boards. In 2021, you'll see everything from fruits to pancakes and sour gummies transformed into a platter. We can expect to see multiple variations of the platter in the coming year.
2. Elevated home café
Brewing coffee is made easier as anyone can get their hands on a French press or AeroPress. More people are brewing their cup of joe at the comforts of their home, from making cold brews, filtered coffees or espressos. The percentage of people who buy coffee beans has increased over the years and we can expect a spike in the coming year as we practice the art of staying home during the ongoing pandemic.
3. Microgreens
Microgreens are seen as a functional food, which means that they can provide key nutrients in a practical way. Some people call them a superfood. These tiny shoots are the baby counterparts of plants like carrots and broccoli. Loaded with four to 40 times more nutrients than their mature counterparts, these tiny shoots are delicious on egg dishes and sandwiches and can be enjoyed in smoothies and salads.
4. Kelp is the new kale
Traditionally used in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cuisine for thousands of years, seaweed has been slowly moving into other cuisines. High in antioxidants, Kelp has many therapeutic and nutritional benefits. It's unlikely to be a huge part of your diet but its definitely enjoyed in sushi or miso soup.
5. Spicy is the new umami
Pinterest Predicts reveals that spicy flavor profiles will make 2021 a real scorcher. According to its annual trend forecast, searches for "hot honey recipe" and "jalapeno pepper jelly recipe" has been on the rise and it looks like tongue-tingling foods will be become more popular than umami.
We can expect to see more trends pop up as the year begins. But for now, it looks like that 2021 will be a colorful year in the world of food.
