One of their main focus was to create high quality and luxury pieces that are made with the best materials. Their jewellery pieces are currently available in .925 (sterling) silver plated in rhodium or 18k gold vermeil.

All their designs are also created in-house here in the Maldives, then produced by suppliers that are certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), or through small businesses which allows them to ensure that the pieces are sourced and produced responsibly.

Rhodium is one of the rarest metals considered, along with platinum and titanium, as a noble metal for its non reactive qualities. Although rhodium itself is too brittle to be shaped into jewellery, a simple plating of it can make jewellery hypoallergenic and helps to long last any piece with a brilliant silvery finish.

As for gold vermeil (French: vehr-may), a jewellery piece can be considerd gold vermeil only when the base material used is .925 silver and the gold coating used is above 10K with a thickness of 2.5 microns. Made completely of precious metals, these pieces are again hypoallergenic and are the highest quality jewellery on the market aside from gold.

While Urban Atoll is very new and exploring how their products are being received by people, they have seen that their latest product, the “Akuru” studs have received a lot of interest.

Both the sisters are currently working on the brand part-time but leaves no leaf unturned in putting the effort into it.  They feel that while there are certain initiative by the government to support small businesses, a lot of it is targeted towards certain industries. They feel that the government could create more opportunities for small businesses from the creative and cultural industries to thrive. Which could be providing low interest or interest free loan schemes for start-ups or creating certain concessions that would help small businesses during the start-up stage.
