Sony Interactive Entertainment Leadership changes - more focus on PSVR

Sony recently announced some changes to its company management structure. While this may not seem relevant, it’s a fascinating look at Sony’s focus as a company in the future. At least two of the new management heads were promoted after being heavily involved in the development of the original PSVR. With PSVR 2 right around the corner, it’s safe to say that Sony is redoubling its efforts into making their VR platform as appealing as flat screen gaming.

VR has been getting a lot of attention in the past few years, with recent tile Half-Life Alyx winning multiple awards and getting a lot of love from critics and players. Other popular VR titles such as Beat Saber, Super Hot VR and Minecraft VR have helped to introduce more people into the amazingly immersive world of gaming in virtual reality.

Global shortage of computer chips

The world is currently facing a massive shortage of silicone computer chips. Computer chips are used in everything from mobile phones, cars and TVs to consoles and almost every single PC component. The lack of supply of the recently released PS5, Xbox Series X and new PC parts can be directly linked to this massive shortage. With demand far outstripping manufacturing capacity of these chips, it’s estimated that it’ll only be in the second half of 2021 that supply will stabilize.

Hopefully, in a few months the scalpers holding onto their ridiculously priced up PS5s and graphics cards will be forced to sell much cheaper as retail shops get more stock and customers can buy directly from them at MSRP.

Gotham Knights delayed

Gotham Knights - initially slated to be released later this year - has been delayed to 2022.

The much anticipated game from previous Batman video game developers WB Games Montreal is a step forward into Gotham City’s story with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer. It seems that fans will have to wait a bit longer to step into their favourite role again as covid related complications have forced the developers to delay the game into next year.

Overwatch Mobile - is a thing?

Blizzard has previously stated that they want to have mobile versions of all their major game franchises. With the runaway success of mobile ports of PUBG, Fortnite and Call of Duty, it’s not a stretch of the imagination to say that Blizzard would be very interested in having their popular shooter Overwatch on mobile platforms too.

Recent internet rumours point to Blizzard wanting to release Overwatch Mobile in tandem with Overwatch 2. The pandemic and delays in game development may have altered their plans, but the fact that Blizzard wants to bring the game to mobile remains true.

New Resident Evil live-action movie releasing this year

Set for a September 3rd release, the movie is titled “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City”. The movie is a reboot of the Resident Evil film franchise, and starts the story over again with brand new actors and actresses playing the iconic Resident Evil characters. Jill, Clair, Leon, Chris and Wesker all return in Welcome to Raccoon City. The movie tells the story of the first two RE games in a more faithful adaptation. The director states that he was heavily inspired by the original games and even incorporated some aspects like fixed camera angles into the movies.

Here’s hoping the movie captures the creepiness of the Spencer Mansion and the horrors lurking around every corner of Raccoon City.

As a bonus for all you wonderful game and movie enthusiasts, Sony has just revealed that they’re working on a Ghost of Tsushima movie. Ghost of Tsushima is one of the most successful games ever released by Sony, and the movie will be directed by none other than Chad Stahelski – the person responsible for the sublime John Wick movies.
