A memorial dedicated to Corporal Hussain Adam, who was martyred during the 1988 invasion of the Maldives, has been inaugurated in his native island of Kulhudhuffushi City.

The monument was officially opened yesterday by Kulhudhuffushi Mayor Mohamed Athif, Hussain Adam’s cousin Ahmed Adam, and family members Aishath Yumna Ahmed and Fathimath Neem Abdul Rasheed.

During the ceremony, Mayor Athif highlighted the significance of honouring those who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation’s independence. He said the courage and sacrifice of Hussain Adam, along with others who lost their lives on November 3, 1988, symbolised the high price of freedom.

The mayor also noted the historical contributions of the northern atoll to national defence, recalling Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the hero who freed the Maldives from Portuguese rule, as another son of the region who stood at the forefront of defending the country.

The memorial features a seven-foot replica of the AK-47 rifle used by Hussain Adam and is located at the former port area, the site from which he last departed Kulhudhuffushi before the fatal attack.

According to the city council, MVR 900,000 was allocated for the design and construction of the memorial building.
