Asphalt Laid In Phase Two of Boduthakurufaanu Magu

MV+ News Desk | February 12, 2026

Asphalt has been laid on the stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between the Fish Market and the North Harbour under phase two of the road’s development project.

MTCC laid the asphalt on the night of 10 February 2026 and completed the works on 11 February 2026.

A total of 260 metres has now been asphalted in the market area, and the upgraded section is expected to open for public use within the coming week.

The next stage of works will include road markings, installation of traffic signage and completion of utility network connections. Construction of the seawall is currently ongoing.

The Construction Ministry previously announced that phase two would be completed ahead of Ramadan. Ramadan is set to commence on 18 February this year, according to the calendar.

MTCC stated that the road expansion will ease transport in an area that experiences heavy congestion, particularly during Ramadan.

Once completed, the project is expected to modernise road infrastructure in the market area, improve pedestrian safety, strengthen stormwater drainage to minimise flooding, and reduce congestion around the commercial harbour, facilitating smoother movement of goods within Malé City.

The work to expand the road began in August last year. The first phase, completed in December, widened the 140-metre stretch from Republic Square to the Fish Market to four lanes by extending the seawall and laying asphalt. Following its completion, MTCC commenced construction of the second phase in mid-December.

Under the second phase, the segment from the Malé Local Market area to the North Harbour is being redeveloped and widened to six metres. In total, 1,088 metres of roadway from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour is being upgraded.
