A Much Needed Shelter for Homeless Cats Underway

MV+ News Desk | October 10, 2022

The congested city of Male’ has an ever-growing population of stray cats, which is a concern shared by both the cat lovers community and the general public. While many consider these cats a nuisance, it’s unarguable that a solution to overpopulation of stray cats is needed.

Many homeless felines can be seen roaming around Hulhumale’, Male’, Vilimale’ and even the islands, reproducing at a rapid speed. Kittens as young as five months old can become pregnant, producing more kittens and continuing the cycle.

The problem has been accelerated by not only  pet owners who do not spay or neuter their felines, but the failure also falls on the system with inaccessible facilities for these services.

At a press conference, Malé City Mayor, Dr, Mohamed Muizzu has announced the construction of an animal shelter and it is expected to start in January of next year.

The city mayor also announced that the facility will be built at their own expense to the extent of their ability.

The drawings and technical work are currently in the process of being finalised by Malé City Council.

The City Council is trying to address the growing problem of stray and domestic cats on the streets.

Their plan is to address these issues with the best of their abilities and provide services at the shelter with the lowest possible cost.

Animal shelters are beneficial for strays or abandoned animals. It is a temporary home for adoptable pets.

Due to the negligence of vet hospitals and the lack of medical attention given to animals, shelters are useful to attend to their medical needs. Pet owners will also be able to adopt these pets.

Last year, Villimalé Hospital was shut down. Since then, it has been difficult to spay and neuter cats at an affordable price.

The continuous negligence from the government has shown that they do not care about animal rights. Taking care of cats’ health and their wellbeing is important for every pet owner.
