Mariyam Nuzla, Parent of Over 2,300 Employees

“A healthy balance of young staffs propelling the growth of the company guided by the experience and mentorship of the older generation is what propels a good company to be the best,” says Mariyam Nuzla, parent of over 2,300 employees at STO who has also served 23 years in the company.

On top of managing her own department, Nuzla is also a working mother.

“Establishing boundaries between your work and personal life ensures that you spend enough time with your family and career as well.”

Nuzu bits of advice to all working moms to take care of themselves, both physically and mentally.

“Exercise regularly, eat healthily, get enough sleep, and practice self-care activities that you enjoy.”

Additionally, she stressed that communication is key to maintaining a work-life balance, both at home and at work, “Let your colleagues and family know your schedule, and communicate your needs and concerns.”

Nuzu says helping people fulfill their potential is her goal as an HR professional, “Hiring the right people and working towards guiding them to thrive in their jobs is what intrigued me to work in this field.”

The experienced HR professional also believes in prioritizing the mental health of workers.

“It is important to create a constructive environment at any company where the mental health of the employees takes the utmost precedence.”

When asked about generational differences in the workforce, Nuzu emphasized how the younger generations now prefer a more balanced life.

“The younger generations usually look towards flexibility and opportunities for career development. They are enthusiastic and excited for new challenges and look towards means of improving their abilities and learning new skills.”

Talking about her work in STO, she illuminates that they are now focusing on employee retention.

“The biggest asset of a company is its employees and its imperative that we continue to serve them to the best of our abilities.”

She explained that the HR department’s function has evolved from just daily operations of managing staff-related affairs.

“We have diversified the HR department adding important aspects like analytics and employee relations to provide the best environment for employees to work.”
