UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Seema Malhotra visited the Maldives this week as part of the 60th anniversary of UK–Maldives diplomatic relations.
During her two-day trip, the Minister travelled to Huraa to observe a UK-supported mangrove conservation project and announced a £250,000 contribution to a new blended finance initiative with the Government of Maldives and UNDP. The programme will support climate-smart and nature-positive sectors including sustainable fisheries and marine biotechnology.
The visit also saw the announcement of 11 new Chevening scholarships for Maldivians, the highest number awarded in a single year. Minister Malhotra held meetings with senior government officials to discuss cooperation on clean energy, maritime security and counterterrorism.
Her visit underscored continued collaboration between the UK and the Maldives across climate action, security and education.
