Opening of the Sea Turtle Health Institute at Jawakara Islands Maldives

A major marine conservation milestone was marked on 10 May with the opening of the Sea Turtle Health Institute (STHI) at Jawakara Islands Maldives, the largest and most advanced sea turtle hospital in the Asian region.

Operated in partnership with the Olive Ridley Project, the facility serves as a flagship centre dedicated to the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of injured sea turtles found across Maldivian waters.

The institute introduces advanced veterinary capabilities, including regenerative medical treatments such as stem cell therapy, used to treat complex conditions like limb injuries, buoyancy disorders and nutritional complications. Officials say these therapies place the facility among a small number globally offering such specialised care for sea turtles.

STHI also features purpose-built circular rehabilitation tanks designed to minimise injury risk while allowing controlled adjustments to water depth and conditions, supporting more effective recovery and long-term rehabilitation.

Beyond treatment, the institute functions as a research and training hub in partnership with the Maldives National University, offering a Sea Turtle Veterinary Assistant Diploma aimed at developing local expertise in marine animal health and conservation.

The facility also includes public education components, allowing visitors and resort guests to participate in guided tours, attend conservation talks, and observe veterinary care in practice.

In addition, the institute supports public engagement in conservation through adoption and sponsorship programmes, enabling individuals to contribute directly to the care of rescued turtles via the Olive Ridley Project.

Officials said the initiative strengthens national marine conservation capacity while promoting awareness of ocean health, positioning the Maldives as a regional leader in sea turtle rehabilitation and marine research.
