Maldives to Send 500 Imams Abroad for Training Over Five Years, Announces Minister

The Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has unveiled plans to send 500 imams abroad for training over the next five years. 

The announcement was made during the inaugural Imams’ Conference 2024, held at the Islamic Centre. In his address to attendees, Minister Shaheem highlighted the crucial role of imams in Maldivian society and emphasised the importance of continuous development in fulfilling their duties.

He noted that significant strides have already been made, with 400 imams trained this year under a new curriculum. Furthermore, 60 imams have been sent overseas for training, with a target to send an additional 100 by the end of the year.

Looking ahead, Minister Shaheem outlined plans to send 100 imams abroad annually, with a five-year goal of training 500 imams overseas. He also pledged to train 1,000 young khateebs during this period. Addressing the challenges faced by imams, he reassured attendees of the Ministry’s commitment to elevating the esteemed role of the imam within Maldivian society.

The one-day conference brought together over 500 imams, with 208 attending in person and more than 300 joining online. Its primary focus was to foster cooperation and collaboration among Maldivian imams, addressing their challenges and exploring ways to enhance mosque management through partnerships with local councils. The event also aimed to promote mosques as welcoming spaces that encourage worship and engagement within communities.

Minister Shaheem expressed particular pride in the participation of young imams and khateebs, describing their involvement as a promising sign for the future of Islamic leadership in the Maldives. He also encouraged the continuation of such events to further support the development of the nation’s religious leaders.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has outlined several additional initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of imams and khateebs, underscoring its dedication to strengthening Islamic leadership across the Maldives.
