MFDA Issues Consumer Warning Over Improperly Labelled Food Products

MV+ News Desk | October 10, 2024

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a warning to consumers, advising caution, as certain food products are being sold without the proper labelling mandated by regulations.

MFDA identified ‘Hinnavaru Athujehi, Bright View’ as an unregistered business operating outside the legal requirements for food production.

According to a statement from the MFDA yesterday, the producer of ‘Hinnavaru Athujehi, Bright View,’ a popular local snack, is not registered as a home-based food producer for income purposes, as required under current regulations. The Authority emphasised that the registration number displayed on the product’s packaging was not issued in compliance with its policies.

The MFDA highlighted that the official register of approved home-based food producers is publicly accessible via the Authority’s website, the ‘Dhirithi’ portal, and the Health Ministry’s website, urging consumers to verify businesses before purchasing food items.

The public is encouraged to exercise caution when purchasing food products and report any suspected regulatory violations to the MFDA through the contact numbers 7603204 or 3014361.

This development follows recent changes in food safety governance. In June, the MFDA took over the registration process for home-based food producers from the Health Protection Agency (HPA), with additional oversight powers granted under the newly ratified Food Safety Act.
