Free Cargo Storage Period at Male’ Port Reduced to Improve Efficiency
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maldives Ports Limited, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, has revealed a reduction in the free cargo storage period at Malé’s commercial port.
The announcement was made during a ceremony welcoming a cargo ship from Maersk Line, the world’s largest shipping company, to the Maldives. Wajeeh explained that the decision comes in response to limited storage capacity at the port, which currently accommodates up to 2,200 containers.
Under the new policy, the free storage period for containers carrying long-lasting and dry goods will be reduced to seven days, while other types of containers will have a five-day free period. Previously, all container types were eligible for a ten-day storage period.
Wajeeh highlighted that the change aims to streamline port operations and better accommodate incoming shipments. He cited a recent incident where 120 containers could not be unloaded due to a lack of available space, underscoring the need for improved efficiency.
He called on traders and importers to cooperate with the revised regulations to ensure smooth operations and timely processing of goods at the port.
