Gov’t to Revise Heavy Vehicle and Waste Collection Hours to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

The government has announced revised operational hours for heavy vehicles and waste collection in Greater Male’ area in an effort to reduce daytime traffic congestion. 

Under the new regulations will restrict large vehicles carrying goods to nighttime hours, allowing them to operate between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am. This adjustment aims to ease road congestion during peak times, improving pedestrian and commuter access during the day.

This initiative involves collaboration with the Ministry of Economic and Trade Development, along with other government agencies. The authorities will conduct consultations with all relevant stakeholders prior to implementing the changes.

Additionally, waste collection hours in Greater Male’ area will shift to a nighttime schedule, with operations moved from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Male’ City Council, and the Waste Management Corporation (WMCO) will be instrumental in executing these new guidelines.

The government expect that scheduling large vehicle movement and waste collection at night will help reduce daytime road usage, making city navigation smoother for residents and reducing congestion across the Male’ area.
