The Speaker of the Maldives’ Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has travelled to Geneva to participate in the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

He departed for Switzerland last evening. The assembly is set to take place from Sunday to Thursday and will gather all statutory bodies of the IPU, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, and Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions. Additionally, it will feature the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs.

The general debate will focus on the theme of harnessing science, technology, and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future. This will provide delegates with a platform to deliberate, exchange views, and stimulate parliamentary action.

During the assembly, resolutions are expected to be adopted on an emergency item and a subject raised by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights concerning the impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
