Police Confirm No Evidence of Sexual Abuse in Wifag Ibrahim Adnan’s Death Case
The Maldives Police Service has stated that there is no evidence of sexual abuse in the case of Wifag Ibrahim Adnan, who died on August 10th after falling from the 10th floor of her residence in the Hasova Building, Maafannu district, Male’ City.
The police response follows a documentary aired by Channel 13, which raised allegations of sexual abuse by Wifag’s stepfather, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim and included various accusations against her family. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Chief Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifau, Head of Major Crime Investigation, refuted these claims and provided an overview of the police investigation into Wifag’s death.
Chief Superintendent Shifau detailed the events surrounding the incident, stating that Wifag fell from her apartment around 5:37 p.m. on August 10th, landing on a pickup truck parked below. Within 30 seconds, the vehicle transported her to a hospital. Her phone and AirPods, which fell onto the road, were retrieved by her mother and later handed over to the police. Wifag’s body had already been taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) when the fall was reported.
The investigation has so far shown no indication of foul play. Shifau confirmed that Wifag had been receiving treatment for a mental health condition since 2016, adding, “So far, there are no suspicions towards anybody in this case.”
Addressing the allegations of sexual abuse, Shifau explained that the police had conducted extensive tests, none of which indicated any signs of abuse. Meanwhile, Channel 13 is under investigation by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission for airing the documentary. The case continues to be closely monitored by both the public and the authorities.
