The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has announced a revision to its policy regarding duty arrangements for pregnant staff and employees with young children, following public criticism of an earlier internal memo.

The decision, made public yesterday, comes in response to concerns that the previous memo might have implied a reduction in the flexibility traditionally afforded to these employees.

In a statement, IGMH acknowledged that the initial memo was poorly worded, potentially suggesting that duty-related accommodations for pregnancy and childbirth would no longer be available. However, the hospital clarified that existing concessions for pregnant employees would remain unchanged.

As a 24-hour healthcare facility, IGMH emphasised the necessity of maintaining efficient patient care. While recognising the importance of flexible duty arrangements, the hospital noted that shorter or altered shifts could adversely affect patient services.

The revised policy aims to balance the need for uninterrupted healthcare delivery with the requirement for reasonable accommodations for employees facing specific circumstances.

IGMH has committed to considering duty flexibility on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that the individual needs of staff members are taken into account. The new policy allows employees, including those who are pregnant or have young children, to request reassignment to departments with more manageable workloads. If such requests are made, the hospital will facilitate transfers to temporary roles that are more suitable during this period.

In concluding its statement, IGMH reaffirmed its commitment to providing reasonable duty arrangements without compromising hospital operations or the quality of patient care.
