MNDF reported that it inspected a total of 144 chemical storage facilities for hazardous materials. Additionally, it gathered information on 62 shops selling chemicals and 399 residential buildings containing chemical storage areas.
Earlier this month, the MNDF launched “Operation Hiraas Faas” (Operation Danger Check), focusing on chemical storage and trade facilities to ensure compliance with existing safety regulations. The operation is also intended to raise public awareness about laws and guidelines for importing and storing hazardous chemicals.
An official from the MNDF Fire and Rescue Department reported that 399 fire-prone buildings were inspected in Male’ as part of the operation. The initiative aims to methodically address fire hazards, preventing potential incidents and enhancing community safety.
Many of these fire-prone buildings in Male’ are predominantly occupied by expatriates. The most recent fire incident occurred at Gaamagu Cafe’ in Henveiru, where the top two floors, constructed with a wooden deck and enclosed in tin, sustained significant damage. The building, which housed 57 foreign residents, has since been rendered uninhabitable.
Operation Hiraas Faas will continue to target areas at high risk for fire to ensure the safety of residents and compliance with safety standards.
