The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has announced that it is preparing to launch studies for road development in Malé and Vilimalé.

According to State Minister Ibrahim Nazeem, the reconstruction work is set to commence shortly in an effort to resolve longstanding road issues. Preparations are currently underway, with technical experts expected to arrive in the Maldives soon to initiate the necessary research.

The project, funded through grants from the Chinese government, will involve the paving of city roads as well as upgrades to water and sewerage systems, electrical infrastructure, stormwater management, and fire hydrants. These improvements aim to provide long-term solutions to the challenges faced by the road network.

Earlier this year, the Road Development Corporation (RDC) was awarded a contract to conduct essential surveys and assessments, including topographic, geotechnical, and hydrological surveys, as well as an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Vilimalé road project. The construction will cover 5.6 kilometres of roads, incorporating sewerage, drainage, and electrical systems.

Malé’s road network currently faces significant challenges, including deterioration and frequent flooding. While temporary drainage systems have been installed in flood-prone areas, no permanent solution has been implemented so far. The upcoming roadworks aim to address these issues in a more sustainable manner.
