Authorities have urged the public to provide any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation. The theft of such a large quantity of cigarettes has raised concerns about organised crime and illicit sales in the region.

This is not the first large-scale cigarette theft reported in the Maldives. In December last year, 34,500 cartons of cigarettes were stolen from a bonded warehouse in Malé, with the estimated value of the goods exceeding MVR 7 million.

Investigations into both cases are ongoing, and there is speculation about a possible connection between the two incidents.
