The five-day programme, held under IMCTC’s ‘Wasata’ initiative, brings together imams, preachers, and orators from across the Maldives to strengthen their ability to counter extremist ideologies and promote moderation.
The training covers methods used by extremist groups, public speaking, communication skills, and principles of moderation. It also provides a platform for sharing effective preaching experiences.
The opening ceremony was attended by Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu, and IMCTC Secretary General Major General Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi.
The initiative is part of IMCTC’s strategy to work with member states on both ideological and security fronts, including raising awareness on terrorism financing and providing religious leaders with modern tools to challenge extremism.
Minister Shaheem described the programme as crucial for spreading accurate information on terrorism, noting that terrorism is an ideological issue unrelated to religion, and that the solution lies in correct knowledge based on Islamic teachings. He also thanked Saudi Arabia for its efforts in protecting the Islamic community and highlighted the Maldives’ potential to benefit from the Kingdom’s expertise.
Major General Al-Moghedi stressed that counter-terrorism efforts require more than military action, emphasising the importance of addressing extremist ideologies, improving international cooperation, sharing information, and strengthening institutional capabilities.
IMCTC, an alliance of 42 Islamic countries formed in 2015, plans to conduct 90 training programmes and 20 awareness initiatives to enhance counter-terrorism efforts across its member states.
