Speaking at the event held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu underscored the critical role of combating corruption in the Maldives’ journey toward becoming a developed nation. The President asserted that digitalisation is pivotal in curbing corruption by increasing transparency. He outlined ongoing efforts to establish a unified, interoperable ID system that would allow citizens to access both public and private services seamlessly. This system, he noted, would be supported by a robust national cybersecurity framework.

Drawing attention to Estonia’s rise to second place on the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, President Muizzu credited the achievement to effective digital transformation. He expressed hope that the Maldives would experience similar progress through the responsible and timely dissemination of information.

During his address, the President highlighted the administration’s commitment to achieving holistic, meaningful, and sustainable development. He reaffirmed the government’s focus on good governance and announced an ambitious goal: by 2028, one-third of the national workforce would work remotely, enabled by digital transformation.

He concluded his remarks by calling for nationwide support and cooperation in the government’s anti-corruption drive and digital transformation agenda. He assured that the legal framework necessary for this transformation is currently under development. Drawing inspiration from Estonia’s experience, he emphasised that the upcoming “Maldives 2.0” initiative would be tailored to the unique needs of the Maldivian context.

Launched under his leadership, Maldives 2.0 envisions a comprehensive digital reform where all state institutions collaborate to deliver fast, secure, and transparent services to the public. Scheduled for implementation over the next three years, this initiative aims to place digital transformation at the heart of governance and service delivery.

The Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, cabinet ministers, senior state officials, and Estonian digital transformation experts attended the inaugural session.
