The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced that 283 young people have applied to take part in the third round of the Young Khatheeb Training Programme.

Launched under the guidance of Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the programme was established following the advice of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Targeted at students in grades 10, 11, and 12, as well as recent school graduates, the programme aims to equip participants with the skills to lead Friday prayers.

The initiative seeks to address the shortage of imams in several islands across the Maldives and to foster a greater interest in becoming imams, delivering sermons, and deepening devotion to Islam among young people.

This marks the third round of the programme, following two successful previous sessions. With the deadline for applications set for 10 May, the programme has already attracted 283 applicants. Minister Shaheem has expressed optimism about the strong response, emphasising that the goal is to train 1,000 young khatheebs by the end of the current presidential term.
