Man Arrested for Using Mobile Phone While Riding Motorcycle, Police Issue Reminder on Road Safety

A man seen looking at his mobile phone while riding a motorcycle has been arrested, police confirmed following an investigation prompted by a widely circulated video on social media.

In the footage, the man is seen riding a motorcycle with one hand on his phone and appearing to focus on the device, while another individual is visible seated on the back of the motorcycle. The Maldives Police Service stated that they launched an inquiry into the incident after the video surfaced online, identifying and arresting the individual involved.

As part of the enforcement action, the police said the motorcycle was towed for 30 days and a fine of MVR 2,000 was imposed. The driver’s licence was also confiscated in accordance with the General Traffic Rules.

Police reiterated that the use of electronic devices such as mobile phones while operating a road vehicle is strictly prohibited. This includes talking on the phone with assistance from another person or using headsets. The force urged all road users to adhere to traffic laws, noting that it is the responsibility of every individual to ensure the safety and security of themselves and others on the road.
