Maldives Reaffirms Commitment to OACPS Reforms at Ministerial Council Meeting in Brussels

The Maldives has reaffirmed its support for ongoing reforms within the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) during the Council of Ministers’ 119th session taking place in Brussels, Belgium.
Ambassador of the Maldives to the Kingdom of Belgium, Geela Ali, delivered a statement on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, at the meeting held from 23 to 25 May 2025. In her address to the Council yesterday morning, Ambassador Geela expressed the Maldivian Government’s support for the OACPS reform agenda, particularly the initiatives led by the new Secretary General, Moussa Salef-Batraki.

She welcomed the Secretary General’s efforts to restructure the organisation’s secretariat, enhance trade opportunities, and promote progress on sustainable development. The Ambassador also underlined the significance of the OACPS-European Union partnership, stating that it holds the potential to deliver long-term economic benefits to member states, including the Maldives.
The OACPS was established in 1975 through the Georgetown Agreement and brings together African, Caribbean and Pacific nations. The Maldives became a full member of the organisation on 9 December 2022 and has since worked closely with other member states and the EU to address shared global challenges.
