The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has opened the opportunity for islands to host the official activities planned to mark this year’s Fishermen’s Day.

Celebrated annually on 10 December, Fishermen’s Day recognises the contributions of fishermen and acknowledges their role in the national economy.

Islands interested in hosting the event have been invited to submit applications to the Ministry through the Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS) by 12:00 p.m. on 19 June.

When selecting the host island, the Ministry will prioritise fishing islands, particularly those with a high number of registered fishermen and fishing vessels. Preference will also be given to islands that have not hosted national day celebrations this year, as well as those that have never hosted Fishermen’s Day or have not done so in the past five years.

The Ministry stated that additional factors will be considered in the selection process, including the extent of infrastructure development, proposed hospitality arrangements, and the inclusion of neighbouring islands in the Atoll in the celebrations.

Since assuming office, the current administration has implemented several initiatives aimed at strengthening and diversifying the fisheries sector. A notable achievement is the introduction of a system to ensure that payments to fishermen are made within 48 hours, addressing a long-standing concern within the industry.

Further efforts include enhancing financial access for fishermen through support provided by the Bank of Maldives, as well as broader investments to improve the sector’s overall capacity and sustainability.
