President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that every Maldivian citizen aged 18 or older who does not currently own a home will receive a written housing guarantee by the end of this year.
In an exclusive interview with PSM News, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to resolving the country’s long-standing housing challenges. He outlined that the government’s housing policy includes a key initiative to provide a guaranteed first home, either a house or an apartment, to all citizens over 18 who do not own one.
“This is a very important promise, and I will ensure that no citizen remains without their own home,” Muizzu stated, emphasising that this policy applies nationwide, including Malé City and all inhabited islands. He said that eligible individuals will be issued a written confirmation of housing allocation before the year ends, adding that the allocation of either a plot of land or an apartment will follow this document.
President Muizzu also revealed that housing units will be allocated from reclaimed areas in the Malé region, including Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu, Uthuru Thilafalhu, and Ras Malé, locations currently being developed through land reclamation projects. In addition to housing provisions in the capital region, he affirmed that arrangements will be made to provide housing in the atolls as well.
The President further detailed several ongoing housing projects in the Greater Malé area. These include the development of 2,000 apartments in Malé, 500 in Villimalé, and 4,000 housing units in Hulhumalé funded through the Indian Line of Credit.
Muizzu said the written commitment to be provided by the end of the year would serve as an official assurance of the government’s housing pledge, forming part of a broader strategy to expand access to affordable housing across the Maldives.
