The government has announced that it will begin a new initiative this year to address housing challenges in Malé City by offering land in the Greater Malé region in exchange for plots located in areas of the capital that are difficult to develop.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, speaking in an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), explained that many properties in Malé are situated in narrow alleyways or at street corners, making them unsuitable for construction or ineligible for housing loans.

The upcoming project aims to allow owners of such properties to voluntarily exchange them for new plots in areas such as Hulhumalé, Uthuru Thila Falhu, Gulhi Falhu, Giraavaru Falhu, and the newly reclaimed Rasmale’.

The President stated that if residents of homes located in congested areas of Malé agree collectively to give up their land, they will be eligible to receive alternative plots in the expanding Greater Malé region.

He added that the vacated plots in Malé will be converted into green spaces as part of the government’s broader urban development strategy.

President Muizzu confirmed that the project would be launched within this year, with land allocations and official documentation to follow. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen in the Maldives has access to adequate housing before the end of his term.
