The Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, has announced that the government aims to establish at least one dialysis centre in every atoll of the Maldives by the end of September this year.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system, with particular focus on expanding access to dialysis treatment. According to the Ministry of Health, dialysis services are currently available in all but five atolls — Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu, Faafu, and Dhaalu.

As part of this campaign, dialysis services have already been introduced in several locations, including the Velidhoo Health Centre in Noonu Atoll, Muli Regional Hospital in Meemu Atoll, Thaa Atoll Hospital, and Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital.

Earlier this year, a centre was also opened at Amina Dhiyo Health Centre in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll. In 2024, a similar facility was launched at Shaviyani Atoll Hospital.

The government’s approach involves prioritising islands with a significant number of patients in need of dialysis. During an interview with PSM News, Minister Nazim stated that the first phase of the project will ensure that every atoll has at least one functioning dialysis centre by September.

At a World Health Day event earlier this year, the President officially inaugurated dialysis services in four atolls, marking a milestone in the nationwide effort.
