The Baa Dharavandhoo Council has raised concern over a number of government projects on the island that remain stalled, including the long-delayed completion of the sewerage system.
According to the Council, two years have passed without the full operationalisation of this essential service, despite the significant financial investment already made in the project.
The sewerage system, which began under the previous administration, is reportedly near completion but has seen no progress since the current administration took office. The Council highlighted the importance of the service, especially as Dharavandhoo continues to develop as a tourism destination. The lack of proper sewerage infrastructure has caused considerable difficulty for residents, who are living without a basic public utility.
The Council noted that several other projects initiated during the previous MDP administration have also come to a standstill. These include initiatives such as the construction of a mosque, road development to modern standards, a new school building, and a police station. Although budgetary allocations have been made for these developments, the Council expressed concern over the absence of visible progress.
With 2025 designated as ‘Visit Dharavandhoo’ year, the Council has urged the government to prioritise and accelerate the completion of these essential services. Emphasising the growing pressure on local infrastructure due to increased tourism, the Council stated that the ongoing delays are both disappointing and disruptive for the island’s residents and development goals.
