Speaking at the opening of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) Standing Committee on Investing in Youth, held in the Maldives, Nazim drew attention to the ongoing disparity in leadership roles despite ongoing efforts to promote gender equality.
The two-day sub-regional meeting, focused on “Women Empowerment and Investment in Young People in South Asia,” brought together parliamentarians from across the region to discuss key challenges and opportunities.
Nazim highlighted that only three out of the 93 parliamentary seats are currently occupied by women, underscoring the need for stronger policy interventions to address the imbalance. He pointed out that while some institutions, such as Customs, employ a majority of women, this representation is not reflected at the leadership level.
He further noted the importance of inclusive decision-making and encouraged policymakers to take concrete steps to increase female participation in governance and leadership roles.
Nazim also congratulated Member of Parliament Dr Anaara Naeem on her election to the AFPPD Executive Committee, stating that her appointment demonstrates the Maldives’ growing engagement in regional leadership initiatives.
