An art exhibition was hosted in Malé to commemorate World Whistleblowers’ Day, observed annually on 23 June to recognise individuals who expose misconduct and promote accountability in the workplace.
The exhibition was inaugurated at the National Art Gallery, with the ceremony attended by several dignitaries including Enrico Boninsegna, Head of the Maldives Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

During the opening, the Whistleblower Protection Unit officially launched its new logo. The design was selected through a public competition that attracted around 70 entries. The winning design, created by Ahmed Nabih, received the highest scores from the judging panel. Nabih introduced the concept behind his logo through a special video presentation shown at the event.
The exhibition showcases twelve artworks centred on the theme of whistleblowing. These works are available for public viewing and purchase, with the exhibition scheduled to remain open until 10:00pm on Tuesday.
Speeches were delivered at the opening ceremony by Whistleblower Protection Unit Director General Mariyam Rifna Letheef, Assistant Director Fathimath Masha, Transparency Maldives Executive Director Asiyath Rizweena, and UNODC’s Enrico Boninsenya.
The whistleblower protection system in the Maldives was established to help reduce losses to the state through corruption and to deter unethical practices. Despite the legal safeguards provided under the Whistleblower Protection Act, the system remains underutilised.
The Act defines whistleblowing as the act of reporting to relevant authorities any unlawful activity that has occurred, is occurring, or is likely to occur within a state agency or by a state official.
