The Maldivian government has dismissed rumours suggesting plans to establish a commercial duty-free zone between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
These rumours emerged following media reports that claimed discussions were underway regarding such a project. However, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has categorically denied these claims, stating that the government has neither discussed nor considered the proposal.
Maldivian media, citing Sri Lankan newspapers, reported that Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is expected to visit the Maldives next month.
The reports mentioned that several bilateral agreements are due to be signed during the visit across various sectors. Nevertheless, the Maldivian government has yet to issue an official statement on the planned visit or agreements.
