Island Aviation Service Limited (IASL) has officially opened its first engineering service building, named the “Ali Firaq Engineering Service Building” in honour of the late, long-serving engineering department member Ali Firaq.

The inauguration took place at Velana International Airport yesterday, attended by Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen and IASL Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas.

The idea for the facility was initially proposed by Ali Firaq in 2015, with the project approved by the company’s board in 2021 and construction completed in 2022. The new building is the first dedicated facility for managing the company’s aircraft spare parts and is expected to improve working conditions, efficiency, and the quality of maintenance work.

The Minister highlighted the government’s goal to make IASL profitable within the next one to two years. He emphasised that the new maintenance facility would reduce costs, enhance safety, and strengthen Maldivian’s capacity to provide services to international airlines. The development reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to advancing the aviation sector.

The Minister expressed hope that IASL will become a self-sufficient and rapidly growing company, benefiting both the business and its employees. He also noted ongoing efforts to elevate Maldivian’s status as the national airline in terms of function and capability.
