The Ministry of Defence has revealed that more than 1,244 individuals have expressed interest in joining the Maldives National Service (DNS) programme, which was introduced earlier this year.
The programme is designed to provide training for those who do not meet the academic or vocational entry requirements following secondary education.
Initiated under the directive of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the National Service Programme aims to channel participants into national service roles, focusing on sectors experiencing labour shortages, particularly those related to national security and public safety.
Participants were selected through assessments conducted across various regions, including individuals who had previously applied for military or civilian roles as well as those outside the public recruitment lists. Recruitment for this phase concluded in May 2025, with some selected candidates scheduled to undergo basic physical and tactical training to support public service functions.
The programme accepts voluntary participation from individuals aged 16 to 28, with those aged 16 to 18 exempt from formal consent and background checks. The Ministry emphasised that participants are not obliged to join the military upon completion.
A monthly allowance will be provided throughout the training period, offering an opportunity for those unable to pursue further education or employment due to qualifications or disciplinary issues.
