The Maldives has called for urgent and decisive international measures to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine during the 2025 Conference on the Question of Jerusalem, held on July 9 in Dakar.
Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the OIC and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Sareer, represented the nation at the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) conference. Under the theme “Palestinian Oppression and Displacement in Jerusalem in the Shadow of the War”, Ambassador Sareer voiced deep concern over continued hostilities and the severe suffering endured in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.
Describing the Israeli occupation as unlawful and systematically oppressive, he warned that it has resulted in widespread displacement, dispossession and dehumanisation. He urged an immediate and sustained ceasefire and called on the international community to respond with unwavering determination, insisting that urgent humanitarian relief and lasting peace must follow.
Ambassador Sareer also reminded delegates of the CEIRPP’s mandate, established by UN General Assembly Resolution 3376 in 1975, to uphold Palestinian rights to self-determination, independence, sovereignty, and the right of return.
This latest appeal follows the Maldives’ earlier condemnation of Israel’s cessation of aid to Gaza in March, and its categorisation of such actions as direct violations of the ceasefire and humanitarian law
