Over 14,000 Individuals Registered on Disability Assistance Programme

More than 14,000 individuals across the Maldives are now registered under the national disability assistance programme, with figures as of June 2025 highlighting the growing scale of financial and therapeutic support provided to persons with disabilities.
According to official statistics, 14,412 people are currently listed in the Disability Assistance Registry. Of these, 125 individuals were newly registered within the year, reflecting continued efforts to reach those in need of support.
The government has now provided financial assistance to 14,236 recipients, with the total amount disbursed under this initiative standing at MVR 51.25 million.
Ongoing Support Through Therapy and Basic Care Aid
In addition to financial aid, the state continues to support therapeutic services for individuals with disabilities. At present, 108 people are receiving regular therapy, with an allocated expenditure of MVR 4.06 million.
A further MVR 385,302 has been spent under the Basic Care Aid Programme, which currently supports 55 individuals who require therapeutic care at home or in specialised settings.

Physical Disabilities Remain Most Prevalent
The data also provides insight into the types of disabilities registered. Physical disabilities remain the most commonly reported, affecting 4,117 individuals (1,818 female, 2,299 male).
This is followed by:
- Multiple Disabilities: 3,224 individuals
- Neurological Disabilities: 1,889
- Mental Disabilities: 1,793
- Hearing and Speech Disabilities: 1,745
- Sight Disabilities: 1,003
- Autism: 586
- Developmental Disabilities: 55
Autism, in particular, shows a significant gender disparity, with 463 male and 123 female individuals recorded.

Age Distribution Highlights Majority Are Working-Age Adults
The majority of those registered are of working age. Data shows that:
- 7,351 individuals are aged between 18 and 64 years
- 4,818 are below 18 years
- 2,243 are aged 65 and above
Overall, the registry includes 6,028 females and 8,384 males, further indicating a notable gender difference in registration numbers.
