Ooredoo Maldives Sets Record for Underwater Panel Discussion

MV+ News Desk | July 13, 2025

Ooredoo Maldives has officially set a Guinness World Record for organising the world’s largest underwater panel discussion, held in the waters of Baa Fulhadhoo. The initiative demonstrated the company’s technical capabilities while highlighting the potential for connectivity in even the most challenging environments.

The concept originated as an internal innovation challenge and evolved into a full-scale production requiring precise planning and coordination. The panel involved five participants, each equipped with waterproof communication equipment and supported by divers trained to manage timed speaking intervals. A dedicated underwater audio-visual network was deployed to ensure seamless real-time transmission to viewers in Malé, Qatar, and other locations.

Participants included the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam; Ooredoo Maldives CEO, Khalid Al-Hamadi; Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem of the Maldives National Defence Force; and Shabeen Ali and Afsheen Mohamed from Ooredoo’s operations and transmission teams. The discussion took place five metres below the surface, with each speaker contributing for two minutes. Audio and video quality remained stable throughout, with no disruptions or technical faults.

“This was more than a record-setting event,” said CEO Khalid Al-Hamadi. “It was a live demonstration of our network’s reliability, enabling clear voice and video transmission under water and across borders.”
