A group of officers involved in prisoner rehabilitation in the Maldives has completed a training programme focused on counselling and mental health, held in Sri Lanka.

According to the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), the programme took place in Negombo and was attended by nine correctional officers and one civil servant. Participants included personnel from three different prisons as well as staff from the MCS Head Office.

The training was conducted in partnership with The Helping Hand Psychological Hospital in Sri Lanka and aimed to build the professional capacity of those working in prisoner rehabilitation. It focused on equipping officers with the skills and knowledge needed to better support the mental health needs of inmates.

During the visit, the Maldivian delegation also toured the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, one of Sri Lanka’s leading institutions in defence and academic training.

The closing ceremony of the training programme was attended by the Commissioner of Sri Lanka’s Prisons Department, Jagath Weerasinghe, and the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Didi.

The MCS stated that the training is part of its broader efforts to strengthen rehabilitation services and enhance the quality of support provided to prisoners.
